6.  The Six Directions of Attention/Universe

The Universe is energy in space.  Energy moves.  Time is the measure of this process of motion.  (Consider the mechanics of any type of clock.)  Energy is not sensed itself, but rather its motion is.  For example, you don't see an identified object, but the light that moves to you from it.

Consider the six most general categories of everything we can pay attention to, classified temporally and spatially:

 PastPresentFuture
InternalIdentityThoughtIntention
ExternalGeneral memorySensationExpectation

Meditation on these should make evident the fact that the past and future are only ideas, that is we know the past only by what we remember and theorize--just as theoretically as the future which we know only by intention and expectation.  There is only one state of the universe, which is the present, and which state simply appears to change.  That is, objects move.  It is motion which constitutes our idea of time, and not time which facilitates motion.

This sort of synthesis of these categories of awareness is a step toward unitive consciousness and liberation from the patterns of memory, including the limitations of the identity-construct, and the anxiety of the anticipation of consequence, including desire.  In this state, which the common person may be familiar with from moments of intense, immediate crisis, personal action may still be effected by the momentum of absorbed and automatic commitments, and by the means of absorbed and automatic skills.
