A Comparison of New Guitar Methods

Studying or practicing Ear Training?  If you're a musician, you should be.  You'll find my Palm software Ear Trainer invaluable.  Also, I teach guitar lessons in Orange County, CA.  (See OCGuitarLessons.com)

For 6- & 7-String in Standard & Uniform Tunings
Movable TriadsStandard Tuning, 6-String

Once you have the Pitches of the fretboard memorized, the following shapes can be applied by positioning the root in the shape (which in all cases below is the lowest note) upon the intended pitch.  You will recognize the shapes from the Open Triads, and they are said to borrow their "Form" from the open shapes, e.g. the shapes with the root on the sixth string and to the left are borrowed from the E open shapes (and you'll recall that in open position the E pitch is on the sixth string to the left), and can therefore be called "E Form" or "E Formation"

When you are playing in a particular position of the fretboard, consider where in that position the pitch of the desired root lies.  Which Movable Shape will apply depends upon which string(s) this pitch is located on.  E.g., if you're in fifth position (left hand covering frets five through nine) and you want to play D Major, you'll recall that within that position, the pitch of D occurs on the fifth string at the fifth fret.  The fifth fret is on the left side of our hand position, so the shape that will apply is the "Root 5-Left" shape.

The diminished triad is rarely called for and is included here more for the sake of comparison, completeness, curiosity and research than for popular practice.
